I have been impressed over and over with this case! At first, I was a little concerned about ordering this case because of a couple of negative reviews. (There weren’t so many detailed positive reviews when I was ordering.) There aren’t really any instructions with it, so it took me a while to discover all of this case’s many possibilities. I do wonder if some people don’t realize all the ways it can be used.. At this point, I’m starting to feel like I’ve got something straight out of a James Bond movie! I haven’t yet figured out how to shoot a bad guys tires out with it, but I’m thinking it is only a matter of time, and I’ll be sure to update this review if I do! Here’s what I’ve learned, so far:
First, it isn’t real leather, which is actually a plus for me. For the price, I think it is very well made. It is made of a soft easily cleanable material that my hand grips easily. The case is lightly padded with thin, lightweight foam cushioning on the exterior. It looks a lot like a day planner from the outside, which helps make the ipad a little less conspicuous. I like this for security reasons.
Overall, the case is a great compromise between providing protection and maintaining a slim, lightweight case design. This case has more padding than the Apple case, but it is the thinnest one I’ve seen other than that. I disagree that the case is uncomfortable for reading because of its bulk and weight, which I had read in one review. With the ipad in it, it is thinner than most traditional books I would read, paperback or hardback. I found with my Kindle that a case added needed bulk and softness, in order to provide enough for your hands to grip comfortably for long periods of time, and this is true for the iPad, as well. Weight-wise, the iPad plus the case is still lighter than many of my hardcover books, and much easier to hold, since you don’t have to keep the pages open.
The case holds the iPad very securely. The only potential weakness that I’ve seen so far is that the case doesn’t completely cover all the edges. I was a little worried about this, but now that I have used it a bit, I feel very comfortable with it. The sides of the case are slightly larger than the iPad, which tends to protect against things scraping across the edges. The elastic corner straps remind me of the ones on my m-edge Kindle case that have held up well for over a year. I like that almost all of the face of the iPad is allowed to show through, preserving more of the original sleek style and feel. When your hands are in typing position, you can’t even see the corner straps at all, and the rest of the time the black color makes them tend to blend in. I do not agree with a previous reviewer who stated that they obstruct the screen. They are well placed to securely hold the iPad in place, and they cover only the tiniest edge of the corner that I have yet to find interfering with viewing or performing any function. The elastic straps do allow for easily removing and replacing the iPad, if needed.
Now for the good stuff! I’ve found that this case can be used in EIGHT different positions. First, for book reading, the front cover folds back completely. You can wrap the strap back and fasten the snap from this position snap to secure the cover and keep the strap out of the way.
Next, you can open the case and fold the iPad out to take advantage of the horizontal viewing stand positions. There are four sets of bumps that allow you to adjust the viewing angle to your preference, or, for typing, you can lay the iPad all the way down on the bumps. The folded cover underneath the iPad creates a slightly raised angle that is great for typing on the iPAd keyboard. Also, the pictures in the listing do not show this, but I discovered that you can pull the big elastic band around the corner when using these positions to hold the stand snuggly in the selected position. With the band in place, the stand is very sturdy, even on un-level surfaces.
A seventh way of using the cover is in the car. You can pull the elastic band over the headrest of the seat, as pictured in the ad listing. Finally, an eighth way of of using the cover is as a vertical stand. You can stand it up vertically by folding the cover all the way around and fastening the snap as if for reading. Then stand the iPad up, and fold the cover out to create a triangle shaped brace behind it. This is great and surprisingly sturdy for level surfaces, but it is probably not a way that it was officially designed to perform, and since there is no tilt nor a front brace, it could be knocked over front-wards by pets, children, clumsy spouses or coworkers, etc. So, use accordingly!
Oh, and as a side note, I’ve found that the snap closure strap is a great place to clip my Pogo Sketch stylus. Whether fastened or open, the snap on the end keeps the stylus attached and handy.
No product will please everyone, but there are very few products with which I’m strongly enough impressed to spend over an hour crafting a review. Needless to say, this is one such product! After watching videos and reading reviews, I was very torn about which case to purchase, and since no case had every single feature I wanted, I expected to be slightly dissatisfied with any of them I got. This one has exceeded expectations so much that I am thrilled to be perfectly happy with what I got. Good luck finding the perfect case for you!
